Explanation

The closing verse of the chapter ends with a thought. Wine gives joy only to the one who drinks it; to the one who sees it, none. But love is not so; it gives joy to one merely seeing it. 'Kaamam' here is the power of love or affection. That it makes even the beholder glad is love's special glory. The comparison is very subtle. Wine controls the body and intoxicates; it is only for the one who partakes. But love makes joy swell not only in a person's heart but in the heart of him who sees it. Elders who watch lovers rejoice too. Thus love grows by being shared.

The hidden message: love is not only a private feeling but a power that gives joy to society. Pure love brings joy to the family and the village. That is why our tradition celebrates weddings as a public festival. Valluvar elsewhere condemns drinking, in the chapter Kallunnamai. Here he uses it only for comparison: the pleasure of intoxication is narrow, the pleasure of love is wide. So the verse praises not wine but the height of love.

The word 'adunaara' in the verse means wine that torments the heart. Valluvar notes the cruelty of wine here too. But his aim is not to praise wine. The pleasure of intoxication is for the drinker alone, is fleeting, and brings pain to him as well. Love gives joy even to the beholder. In this way he distinguishes between higher and lower pleasure.

A story

The Wedding of Deivayanai

This is the story of the wedding of Murugan and Deivayanai told in the Kanda Puranam and the sthala puranas of Thiruparankundram. After Murugan defeated Surapadma, Indra wished to give his daughter Deivayanai in marriage to him. Murugan had protected the devas, who were tormented by Sura, and the wedding was arranged as gratitude.

Deivayanai is called 'Devayanai' because she was raised by the white elephant Airavata. She loved Murugan in her heart. Tradition says she did penance and obtained Murugan as her husband.

The wedding took place at Thiruparankundram with great splendour. Devas and sages assembled; Indra poured the water of giving; Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and Parvati all blessed them. The Purana says all the gods saw and rejoiced.

Here everyone who saw the couple rejoiced. Everyone who took part in the wedding found joy in merely seeing the couple's love. This is a rare example of love that gives joy not only to the partaker but to the beholder.

Even today at Thiruparankundram the Murugan-Deivayanai Thirukalyanam is celebrated with great splendour on Panguni Uthiram. Lakhs of people watch it and rejoice. This is the living festival of the verse 'kandaar magizhseithal'.

The story tells us that pure love gives joy not only to individuals but to all who see it; celebrating it as a festival is the beauty of our culture.
