Energy · Ookkamutaimai

This chapter teaches that firmness of spirit and an unflagging drive are a person's real wealth. Possessions come and go, but fortune seeks out the energetic by itself, and high aims that do not give way even in defeat are what make a human being truly human.

Introduction

This chapter, which follows the Arasiyal section in the Porutpaal, is on 'ookkam udaimai', the possession of drive, the rising of the spirit. The earlier chapters told how a ruler should do justice and how he should gain information. This one speaks of the inner stirring that drives all of those. Even with justice and knowledge, nothing happens without the eagerness to strive. Valluvar's view is therefore that ookkam is the driving force not only of government but of every field of life.

The word 'ookkam' has many senses: enthusiasm, uplift of mind, eagerness, perseverance. It is not a one-day emotion; it is a firmness of mind that stands even when obstacles come. The very first verse of the chapter, 'udaiyar enappaduvadhu ookkam', redefines the word wealth itself. In his view the one who has ookkam is richer than those with money, land or armies. The second verse says wealth does not stay in one place and goes away, whereas ookkam does not depart so.

From the third to the sixth verse the benefits of ookkam are shown: those with it do not suffer even if they lose their wealth, prosperity itself seeks out their place, a person's height is the measure of his mind, and all that we think of should be lofty. The seventh verse brings the simile of an elephant pierced by an arrow, a fine picture of not yielding in distress. The eighth says those without ookkam cannot even take pride in generosity. The ninth shows bulk without spirit. The tenth ends harshly: those without ookkam are like trees given a human form.

The chapter suits young and old alike. A student who failed, one who lost a job, one suffering illness and an elder who has retired may all come to a point of asking what now. It is the rising of the spirit that holds them then. The opportunities of the outer world may change; as long as the inner drive stays with them, new opportunities can be made.

At the same time ookkam is not blind desire or excessive vanity. It must be joined with dharma and with wisdom. Valluvar speaks of 'uyarvu ullal', thinking of lofty goals. The lesson of this chapter is complete only when the three come together: a lofty goal, firm effort and an unflagging heart.

Chapter story

Bhagiratha Who Brought Down the Ganga

The story of Bhagiratha, told in the Bala Kanda of the Ramayana and in the Bhagavata Purana, is honoured in our tradition as the crowning tale of perseverance. King Sagara of Ayodhya had sixty thousand sons. When he performed the Ashvamedha sacrifice, Indra stole the sacrificial horse and hid it near the hermitage of the sage Kapila. Sagara's sons dug down to the netherworld in search. On seeing the horse near Kapila, they abused him as a thief. In the fire of the sage's wrath all sixty thousand became ashes.

Since proper water rites were not performed for them, their souls did not attain a good state. Their release would come only if the celestial Ganga descended to the earth and touched those ashes. Many kings of Sagara's line tried. Amshuman and Dilipa did penance for their whole lives and did not succeed. They died in the attempt.

Bhagiratha, the young scion of that line, gave up the kingdom and went into penance. He did tapas for many years towards Brahma. At last Brahma appeared and agreed to send Ganga. But he said, 'The earth cannot bear the force of Ganga falling from heaven; only Lord Shiva can bear it.' So Bhagiratha again did severe penance to Shiva. Tradition says he stood on one foot for a year.

Pleased by his firmness, Shiva agreed to receive Ganga on his matted locks. When Ganga came rushing down proudly, he held her within his locks. Then he released her as a small stream. That stream flowed by the path Bhagiratha showed, went into the netherworld, touched the ashes of the Sagara princes and granted them liberation. Hence Ganga also got the name Bhagirathi.

This story shows many faces of ookkam. First, Bhagiratha did not give up the effort where his forefathers had failed. He was not afraid, thinking 'my ancestors could not do it'. Second, when one obstacle was removed and the next arrived, he did not tire. Having won Brahma's grace, he began the fresh effort of seeking Shiva. Third, his goal was not for his own good but for his ancestors and the world.

That is why the phrase 'Bhagiratha prayatna' stands in our language as the image of rare, hard and unyielding effort. The verse 'ulluva thellaam uyarvullal' and the verse 'aakkam adharvinaaych chellum asaivilaa ookkam udaiyaan uzhai' meet here.

In Tamil homes this account is remembered on new-moon days when water is offered to ancestors, a reminder that one person's firm effort can bless generations.
