Explanation

'Amizhdhu' is the nectar that gives the gods life. It is believed that one who drinks it has no death. The lover says: her arms seem made of nectar, for each time they touch me my life sprouts anew.

'Thalirthal' is putting out fresh shoots, regaining life. The life that withered with love's longing revives at her touch. It speaks of the freshness that union brings after the pain of separation.

'Pedhai' here is not an insult but a word for a young woman. It is a gentle word for innocence, simplicity and guilelessness. It is one of the age-names of women in the Tamil tradition.

Commentators extend the verse to the life-giving power of loving touch. The refreshment a caring touch gives when the mind has flagged is known to all.

This truth is not only in household life; it is in parents embracing children and friends patting a shoulder. A loving touch works like medicine.

In Tamil tradition the love of Murugan and Valli is a folk-style example. Valli was a hunter's daughter; the Kandapuranam tradition says Murugan came in several guises to the millet field to win her, and won her love.

We too can realise how much life our loved ones' touch and support give us, and honour it with gratitude.

A story

Murugan and Valli in the Millet Field

The Kandapuranam and Tamil folk tradition lovingly sing of the love of Murugan and Valli. In the forest of Valli Hills, the hunter chief Nambirajan found a baby where valli tubers were dug, named her Valli and raised her. Valli grew up and guarded the millet field.

One day Narada told Murugan of Valli's beauty and devotion. Tradition says Valli had been born in a previous life as Vishnu's daughter and wished to win Murugan. Murugan came to Valli Hills to win her.

First he came as a hunter. When he approached Valli, hearing her father was coming she was frightened and he stood as a vengai tree. Then he came as an old devotee and asked Valli in the millet field for water, honey and millet flour. She gave them lovingly.

The old man told Valli his heart. Valli hesitated. Then, hearing that an elephant was coming, Valli was frightened and clung to the old man. Tradition says this was Murugan's elder brother Vinayaka coming as an elephant to help. Murugan showed his true form.

Valli accepted him lovingly. When her father's hunters opposed, Murugan made them swoon with his vel and then revived them. At last Nambirajan rejoiced and gave Valli in marriage to Murugan.

The charm of this story lies in the love shown at each touch between Murugan and Valli. It is the feeling of verse 1106: love in which life sprouts at touch. Valli was revived by Murugan's nearness; Murugan rejoiced in her love.

In the Tamil tradition Murugan is the god of the kurinji hills and Valli a daughter of the hill tribe. That God came seeking the love of a simple hill girl shows that before love there is no high or low.

We too can renew relationships with love in our households. A loving touch and word can make a bond sprout again.

To reflect on

When did a kind touch or word last bring someone back to life, and could I give one today?
