Explanation

Valluvar shows that the joy of love grows not in one state but in three steps: oodal, unarthal, punarthal. Oodal is the small quarrel born of love. Unarthal is the understanding of each other after the quarrel. Punarthal is the reunion.

Oodal is not the enemy of love; it is the expression of love. Between people who have no love, even quarrels do not come. So oodal is a sign that love exists. Valluvar later sings of it at length in a separate chapter, 'Oodaluvagai'.

The step of unarthal is very important. Understanding another's mind after the quarrel is what grows the relationship. Union without understanding is mere bodily pleasure; union with understanding is joy of the heart.

'Punarthal' is the conclusion. The heat of the quarrel is cooled by the light of understanding and blossoms as the sweetness of union. So these three are a cycle following one another.

Commentators take 'kaamam koodiyaar petra payan' as the true fruit that those united in love obtain. That is, the fruit of household life is not only bodily pleasure but this cycle of feeling.

In the Hindu tradition the Parijata story of Krishna and Satyabhama is a sweet example. Satyabhama's quarrel, Krishna's effort and the final reunion show all three steps.

We too need not fear small quarrels in household life; we can learn understanding from them and deepen the relationship.

A story

Krishna Brings the Parijata for Satyabhama

The Harivamsa and the Vishnu Purana tell how Krishna brought the Parijata tree for Satyabhama. Rukmini and Satyabhama are the foremost among Krishna's wives. One day the sage Narada brought Krishna a Parijata flower from the world of the gods.

Krishna gave the flower to Rukmini. Learning of this, Satyabhama was greatly hurt. She was angry that it was given to Rukmini and not to her. She shut her room, took off her ornaments and sat in the 'kopa-griha', the room of anger. This is oodal.

Krishna learned of this and came to her. "Dear lady, why the anger?" he asked lovingly. Satyabhama said, "That flower alone is not enough; the tree itself must be in my garden." Krishna laughed and promised, "So be it."

Krishna mounted Garuda, took Satyabhama with him and went to Indra's world. When Indra refused to give the tree, Krishna fought and defeated him and brought the Parijata tree to Dvaraka. He planted it in Satyabhama's garden.

She was glad. She understood that Krishna had acted knowing her heart by word and deed. That was unarthal. The quarrel was cooled and the two united joyfully, tradition says.

Tradition adds one more graceful touch. Though the branches of that tree were in Satyabhama's garden, its flowers fell in Rukmini's courtyard. It is a story that graciously shows that Krishna's love belonged equally to both wives.

This story beautifully shows the three steps of verse 1109: Satyabhama's quarrel, the understanding that came through Krishna's effort, and at last the union.

We too can learn from it how forgiveness and understanding after small quarrels in household life make a relationship sweet.
