Mahabharata, Virata ParvaPrince Uttara's Boast
From the Mahabharata, Virata Parva. When the Kauravas seized King Virata's cattle, Prince Uttara boasted before the palace women: 'If I only had a charioteer, I would go out alone like Arjuna and defeat them all!'
Arjuna, in disguise as Brihannala, came forward as his charioteer. But on the battlefield, seeing the vast army with Bhishma, Drona and Karna, Uttara trembled, leapt from the chariot and ran.
Brihannala caught him, made him drive, took up the Gandiva bow himself and won the battle. The one who boasted ran away; the one who stayed silent won.
