Explanation

It is easy to see that wealth gained by leaving the right path brings evil. But Valluvar speaks of the hard case here: even if that wealth seems to bring only good, give it up. 'Nandre tharinum' means even if it brings only good.

This is a very high command. Wealth that came by leaving fairness may truly bring good: property, position, fame. Even then he says do not accept it. The reason is that the honesty of the mind is spoiled by it.

The word 'andre', that very day, is important. Give it up the same day; do not put it off to tomorrow. If we delay a day the mind starts to find justification.

'Ozhiya vidal' is leaving it entirely. It is not saving half and giving up the rest. All of the gain that came against the right should be set aside.

Commentators take 'aakkam' as wealth; some include fame, position and every gain.

In the Hindu tradition the best example is Bharata. The kingdom came to him through the boon Kaikeyi obtained. It was a gain that might bring him good. But because it came by leaving fairness, he refused it that very day.

In our lives this comes in small forms: extra marks, money that came by mistake, a post gained without merit. To return them that very day is the practice this verse teaches.

A story

Bharata Refuses the Kingdom

Bharata's act in the Ayodhya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana is much honoured. When Dasharatha died, Bharata and Shatrughna were at their maternal grandfather's house. Messengers urgently called them to Ayodhya. Bharata feared that something evil had happened.

At Ayodhya he learned of his father's death and of Rama's going to the forest. When he learned that all this came from the boons his mother Kaikeyi had asked for, he shook. Kaikeyi said gladly, "The kingdom is yours; now there is no obstacle."

Bharata spoke harshly to her. Valmiki puts in his mouth words to the effect: "This is wealth against dharma; you are no mother of mine." He refused to take the kingdom. After finishing his father's last rites he went to Chitrakuta to find Rama.

There he bowed to Rama and begged him to return and be king. When Rama refused, to keep his father's word, Bharata took Rama's sandals, placed them on the throne and ruled in their name.

Tradition says he did not live in Ayodhya but led an ascetic life at Nandigrama. For fourteen years he took no royal comfort.

Here the whole shape of verse 113 appears. The kingdom was wealth that would bring Bharata only good, and the people may have loved him. But it came by leaving fairness, so he gave it up that very day.

Though he grieved that his mother's act was unforgivable, he stood firm in his own. That made him worthy of praise.

We too can learn from Bharata the courage to refuse opportunities that came by leaving the right path, however attractive.

What gain have I accepted that I know did not come the right way?
