Explanation

'Thakkaar' are the worthy; 'thagavilar' the unworthy. How to know them? Valluvar says by their 'echcham'. 'Echcham' is what remains, that is, the children and fame they leave.

In his lifetime a person may hide the truth. By talk and appearance he may show himself good. But as time passes, the children he raised and the works he began show his truth.

Children of parents of good character generally grow with humility and honesty. For children learn not what the parents said but how they lived. That is why Valluvar takes the legacy as the measure.

Most commentators take 'echcham' as children; some stretch it to fame and deeds left. Both fit.

We should not generalise the verse too harshly. Good parents may have bad children and bad parents good ones. Valluvar speaks of the general tendency, not fate.

In the Hindu tradition Rama's sons Lava and Kusha are a lovely example. They grew in Valmiki's hermitage and, as young heroes, sang the Ramayana. Their humility and learning appeared as an echo of their father's righteous life.

We can remember that our life becomes a lesson for our children and others. What we live is our legacy more than what we say.

A story

Lava and Kusha Sing the Ramayana

The Uttara Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana tells the story of Lava and Kusha. After Rama sent Sita to the forest, she stayed in Valmiki's hermitage. There twin sons were born to her. Valmiki named them Lava and Kusha and raised them.

Valmiki taught them the Vedas and archery. He also taught them to sing, with sweet music, the Ramayana he had composed. Though born princes, they grew in forest life with simplicity, humility and learning.

When Rama performed the Ashvamedha sacrifice, Valmiki went there with his pupils. Lava and Kusha sang the Ramayana among the sages and in the streets of Ayodhya. Their music and humility charmed the people.

No one knew who they were. But their appearance and conduct reminded people of Rama's nature. Though they had the radiance of princes, they asked for no gift and even refused gold. The tale says they spoke to the effect, "We are children raised by sages; what need have we of gold?"

Rama marvelled at their song. Seeing their learning and conduct, he later learned they were his own sons. The character of the children showed their line.

As verse 114 says, whether a person is worthy is seen from his children. Lava and Kusha's conduct stood as the legacy of Rama's righteous life; Sita's purity too showed in them.

There is a lesson for us. Rather than leaving our children money, if we grow simplicity, humility and learning in them, that is the proof of our life.

Seeing that Rama's nature showed in children he had not raised, we see that a parent's character spreads through life and blood.

If someone judged me only by what my life has produced in others, what would they see?
