Nirkak karral sol thirampaamai

Meaning

To stand by one's learning is to keep one's word.

Word by word

learning so as to stand by it
is not going back on one's word

Explanation

To stand by what one has learned, says Avvaiyar, is not to go back on one's word. Learning is not memorising for an exam; it is practising what one has learned in one's life.

Thiruvalluvar says the same: learn thoroughly what should be learned, and then stand by it (Kural 391).

Mahabharata, Adi Parva

Ekalavya's Gift to His Teacher

From the Mahabharata, Adi Parva. Ekalavya, a young hunter, wished to learn archery from Drona, but Drona refused him. Undaunted, Ekalavya made a clay image of Drona in the forest, took it as his teacher, practised alone and became a great archer.

One day Drona and the Pandavas saw his skill and were amazed. When asked who his teacher was, he said, 'You are.' Remembering his promise to make Arjuna the greatest archer in the world, Drona asked for the thumb of his right hand as his teacher's fee.

Ekalavya cut it off and gave it without hesitation. He did not go back on his word to the one he had accepted as teacher. His steadfastness in standing by what he had learned is honoured to this day, even as the injustice done to him is remembered.
