Explanation

A person of impartiality may sometimes meet poverty or a low position. Through honesty he may lose chances; he may miss a post. This verse comforts him: the world will not count that as ruin.

'Thaazhvu' is a lowly state, small means. The lowliness of the honest is not truly lowliness; in people's minds it stands as a glory. The village respects him: "He is poor, but honest."

This joins the thought of verse 112. There he said the wealth of the impartial grows; here he says even if the wealth lessens, it is no disgrace. In both states impartiality is kept.

Commentators read 'keduvaaga vaiyaadhu' in two ways: the world will not count his low state as ruin, or will not think of him as bad. Both reach the conclusion that his esteem does not fall.

The verse is needed today as well. Many live honestly on small incomes. The world is quick to call them "failures". Valluvar denies it.

In the Mahabharata Vidura is an example. Though regarded as the son of a maidservant, because of his fairness and wisdom Bhishma, Dhritarashtra and Krishna all respected him. He lived in a simple hut, yet his esteem did not fall.

The verse gives us the faith that our worth lies not in wealth or position but in our impartiality.

A story

Vidura in His Humble Hut

In the Mahabharata Vidura is a sage born in the royal house. Born through Vyasa to a maidservant, he was not entitled to the throne. Yet he stood as the chief minister of Hastinapura, an adviser who knew dharma. His speech carried impartiality.

The 'Vidura Niti' in the Udyoga Parva is his counsel to Dhritarashtra. "Your sons' acts are against dharma; return what belongs to the Pandavas," he said without hesitation. Though the king disliked it, he told the truth.

When Draupadi was insulted in the dice assembly, everyone kept silent. Only Vidura rose and openly said it was injustice. For this he earned the hostility of the royal house.

He did not increase his wealth. Duryodhana insulted him many times. Tradition says that before the war he broke his bow and stood aside, saying he would take part on neither side.

When Krishna came to Hastinapura as peace envoy, he refused the feast in Duryodhana's palace and stayed in Vidura's simple hut, taking food there. That Krishna, though a palace was available, sought a humble hut showed the world Vidura's worth.

Here Vidura's lowness was not counted as lowness. His hut, his simplicity, his lowly birth did not reduce his esteem. This is what verse 117 says: the world will not count as ruin the low state of one who stands in virtue with impartiality.

Even elders like Bhishma honoured Vidura's counsel. He never sought power, yet his name still stands as a sign of dharma.

When we worry over chances lost through honesty, we may learn from Vidura that what looks like loss in fact raises our worth.

To reflect on

Am I afraid that honesty will make me look small, and whose eyes am I thinking of?
