From the PuranasThe Boon of Bhasmasura
From the Puranas. The demon Bhasmasura performed fierce penance to Lord Shiva. Shiva, called Ashutosh because he is so easily pleased, appeared and offered him a boon. The demon asked, 'Let whoever I touch on the head turn to ashes.' In his kindness, Shiva granted it.
The moment he had the boon, Bhasmasura's gratitude vanished like writing on water. To test it, he rushed to place his hand on the head of Shiva himself, the very giver of the boon. Shiva withdrew from him.
Then Vishnu appeared before the demon as Mohini, an enchanting woman. Captivated, Bhasmasura wanted to dance with her. 'Dance exactly as I dance,' said Mohini. In the middle of the dance she placed her hand on her own head. Copying her every move, Bhasmasura placed his hand on his own head and was reduced to ashes.
A kindness given to a heart without moisture is not merely forgotten; sometimes it turns against the giver. But in the end, dharma protects itself.
