Explanation

However hard we work, some things do not come right at once. That does not make the effort useless. Tall mango and jackfruit trees bear no fruit until their season comes, yet all that time they are sending down roots, growing and making ready.

Avvaiyar says 'even if one strives again and again'. She honours repeated effort, but she asks that patience go with it. The hurry that looks for the harvest on the day of sowing brings only disappointment.

Today we expect instant success in exams, jobs and business. Yet the student learning music, the person starting an enterprise and the patient recovering from illness all have their season. Wisdom is to do one's duty and wait, trusting time.

From the Valmiki Ramayana (Bala Kanda)

Bhagiratha Brings Down the Ganga

From the Valmiki Ramayana. The sixty thousand sons of King Sagara of Ayodhya were burned to ashes by the anger of the sage Kapila. It was said they could find peace only if the heavenly river Ganga came down to earth and washed over their ashes.

Sagara's grandson Anshuman did long penance to bring her down, and failed. His son Dilipa strove all his life, and he too failed. Generations passed.

Dilipa's son Bhagiratha performed fierce austerities. Brahma was pleased and agreed to send the Ganga, but the earth could not bear the force of her fall, so Bhagiratha did penance again, this time to Shiva. Shiva caught the Ganga in his matted locks and released her gently to the earth. With Bhagiratha leading the way in his chariot, the Ganga followed and washed over the ashes of his ancestors.

The earlier generations' efforts were not wasted, yet the Ganga came down only when her season had come. To this day, untiring effort is called 'Bhagiratha's effort'.

To reflect on

What effort of yours is waiting for its season? Does it need more work, or more patience?
