Explanation

This verse states one truth through three images: true nature does not change. Boil milk as long as you like and it loses none of its sweetness; it only grows richer. Put a conch shell in the fire and it does not blacken; it turns whiter still. In the same way, the noble remain noble in character even when they lose wealth and position.

In the middle sits a contrasting thought: those who are not true friends never become friends, however close you get to them. Just as boiled milk stays milk, they too stay what they are.

Hardship is the touchstone that reveals a person's real nature. The noble are those who do not abandon honesty when they are tested. Someone who loses their job yet refuses to cheat, and works their way back, is today's 'burnt conch that still turns white'.

From the Markandeya Purana

Harishchandra, Who Never Broke His Word

From the Markandeya Purana. King Harishchandra of Ayodhya was famed for never telling a lie. The sage Vishwamitra resolved to test his truthfulness.

To keep his word to the sage, Harishchandra gave away his entire kingdom. Even then a sacrificial fee remained due. To pay it he sold his wife Chandramati and his son Lohitashva, and finally sold himself as a servant to the keeper of a cremation ground.

The king now tended funeral pyres. One day Chandramati came to that very ground carrying the body of their son, who had died of a snakebite. Faithful to his duty, Harishchandra told her the body could not be cremated without the fee. His heart was breaking, but his truthfulness and sense of duty did not waver.

At that moment the gods and Vishwamitra appeared. The boy was restored to life and Harishchandra's kingdom was returned to him. As a burnt conch turns whiter, the fire of suffering only made Harishchandra's truth shine brighter.
