Explanation

Will those ready to give their lives for honour bow before their enemies? Never. Avvaiyar's image is a stone pillar. Bending under a load, as a wooden post might, is not in the nature of stone; if the burden is too great it splits and breaks, but it does not bend.

Avvaiyar is not praising stubbornness here; she is praising firmness in what is right. Better to fall resisting injustice than to bend before it: that is the voice of the Tamil heroic tradition. The words 'when the moment comes' matter. This firmness is not for every occasion, only for the place where it is truly needed.

Today it shows in the honest employee who will not bow to an official demanding a bribe, and in anyone who speaks up against a wrong.

From the Valmiki Ramayana (Aranya Kanda)

The Sacrifice of Jatayu

From the Valmiki Ramayana. Ravana seized Sita and flew south toward Lanka in his aerial chariot. Her cries reached Jatayu, king of the vultures, an old friend of King Dasharatha, now aged.

Jatayu blocked Ravana's path and warned him: 'Carrying off another man's wife is adharma. Let Sita go.' Ravana would not listen. Though Jatayu knew he was the weaker, he neither retreated nor bowed. He fought fiercely with beak and talons, smashed Ravana's chariot and killed his charioteer.

At last Ravana cut off Jatayu's wings with his sword, and the old bird fell to the ground. When Rama came searching for Sita, Jatayu told him that Ravana had gone south, and then breathed his last. Rama performed his funeral rites as he would have for his own father.

Like a stone pillar that splits under too great a load but never bends, Jatayu fell, but he did not bow to adharma.

To reflect on

On what would you never bend? How do you tell whether that firmness is principle or mere stubbornness?
