From the Valmiki Ramayana (Ayodhya Kanda)The Deed Dasharatha Remembered
From the Valmiki Ramayana. After Rama had gone to the forest, the grief-stricken Dasharatha told Kausalya one night of something that had happened in his youth.
'As a prince, I had the skill of shooting a target by its sound alone. One night I went hunting on the bank of the Sarayu. I heard a sound in the water and, thinking an elephant was drinking, I loosed an arrow. But it was a young ascetic, filling a pot with water for his blind, aged parents.'
'Before he died, the young man asked me to take the water to his parents. I went and told them the truth. In his grief, the father cursed me: "As I die of grief for my son, so you too will die of grief for your son."' That very night Dasharatha died of grief at parting from Rama.
Though he had a kingdom, wealth and four sons, Dasharatha's last days were shaped by a deed of the past, like one who goes to the wish-granting tree and receives a bitter fruit.
