Santhana menkuratu thaanthaeyntha kaalaththum / Kantham kuraipataa thu; aathalaal - thamtham / Thanamsiriyar aayinum thaarvaenthar kaettaal / Manamsiriyar aavaroa marru

Meaning

Sandalwood loses none of its fragrance however much it is worn down; so too the great, though their wealth has shrunk, will they turn small-hearted even when garlanded kings come to them?

Word by word

a soft block of sandalwood
even when worn down
its fragrance does not lessen
their own wealth
though they have become small
garlanded kings
if they ask
will they become small-hearted?

Explanation

Rub a block of sandalwood on a stone again and again until it grows small, and its fragrance does not lessen; it is fragrant to the last sliver. In the same way, the excellent, even when their wealth has dwindled into poverty, do not become small-hearted, even if garlanded kings come asking; they do not give up their generosity.

The subtlety of the image is that being worn down is how sandalwood releases its scent. Hardship does not hide the character of the noble; it reveals it.

Families who still welcome guests when money is short, and people who share even when they have little beyond their needs, carry this sandalwood fragrance today.

From the Mahabharata (Vana Parva)

Karna's Armour and Earrings

From the Mahabharata. Karna, son of the sun god Surya, was born with divine armour and earrings fused to his body. While he wore them, no one could defeat him. He was famed for his generosity; it was his vow never to refuse anyone who asked him for anything during his midday worship.

To protect his son Arjuna in the coming war, Indra wanted Karna's armour. Surya, learning of this, warned Karna in a dream: 'Indra will come disguised as a Brahmin and ask for your armour. Do not give it.' Karna answered humbly, 'Better that I lose my life than say no to one who asks.'

The next day Indra came in the guise of a Brahmin and asked for the armour and earrings. Without hesitation Karna cut them from his own body and handed them over. Amazed at his generosity, Indra gave him in return his own Shakti weapon, which could be used only once.

Though he gave away his own protection, Karna's heart did not shrink. Like sandalwood whose fragrance stays as it wears away, his generosity gave off its scent even in loss.

To reflect on

Is it easy to keep a giving heart in a time of loss? When has that been hard for you?
