Explanation

The last verse of Moodurai speaks of the highest virtue of all. Even as someone cuts it down, a tree gives them cool shade and shelters them from the sun. In the same way the wise protect, as far as they can, even those who harm them to the point of death.

In the first verse the coconut palm returned sweet water for plain water: good for good. In the last, the tree gives shade even to the axe: good even for harm. The book begins with gratitude and ends with generosity even toward enemies. This is the summit of dharma.

Not everyone can reach it at once. But refraining from revenge against someone who hurt us, and helping them when they are in trouble, are first steps toward becoming that shade-giving tree.

From the Valmiki Ramayana (Yuddha Kanda)

Go Home Today, Come Back Tomorrow

From the Valmiki Ramayana. In the war at Lanka, Ravana came onto the battlefield himself for the first time to face Rama. A fierce battle followed. Rama's arrows shattered Ravana's chariot, felled his charioteer and horses, broke his bow and knocked his crown to the ground. Ravana stood weaponless and exhausted.

Here was the one who had carried off Sita and killed many of Rama's monkey allies, standing helpless before him. A single arrow could have ended the war that day. But Rama said, 'You are weary. It is not dharma to kill an unarmed man. Go back to Lanka and rest. Come tomorrow with a chariot and bow, and then you will see my strength.'

Ashamed, Ravana returned to his palace. Later, when the war was over and Ravana had fallen, Rama told Vibhishana, 'Enmity ends with death,' and asked him to perform Ravana's funeral rites with due honour.

Like a tree that gives shade even to the one who comes to cut it, Rama kept to dharma even toward his enemy.
