Ammi thunaiyaaka aarizhintha vaarokkum / Kommai mulaipakarvaar kontaattam - immai / Marumaikkum nanranru maanithiyam poakki / Verumaikku viththaay vitum

Meaning

Trusting the favours of courtesans is like crossing a river with a grinding stone for a float. It is good neither for this life nor the next; it squanders great wealth and sows the seed of poverty.

Explanation

Delighting in the company of those who sell their charms is like going down a river with a grinding stone for a float. It does not help you stay afloat; it drags you under. It is good neither for this life nor for the next, says Avvaiyar; it squanders great wealth and becomes the seed of poverty.

The image of the grinding stone is sharp. A man who clings to a heavy stone and steps into the river believes it will hold him up, but it is the very thing that pulls him down. Wrong pleasures are like that.

Avvaiyar stresses 'this life and the next' because such a path harms every part of life: money, family, good name and the spirit.

Srimad Bhagavatam, Book 6

The Fall and Rescue of Ajamila

From the Srimad Bhagavatam, Book 6. In the city of Kanyakubja lived a young brahmin named Ajamila, learned and well-behaved. One day, returning from the forest on an errand for his father, he saw a woman of loose ways and was captivated.

That infatuation dragged him all the way down. He abandoned his wife and spent all the wealth his father had saved on her. Then he lived by gambling, theft and deceit to feed himself. Like a man clinging to a grinding stone, his life sank.

His youngest son was named Narayana. On his deathbed, terrified at the sight of Yama's messengers, he called out to his son, 'Narayana!' Hearing that holy name, the messengers of Vishnu came and stopped Yama's servants. Restored to life, Ajamila repented deeply of his fall, went to Haridwar and spent the rest of his life in worship of the Lord.

This one story shows both how a wrong pleasure can sink a good life and how the Lord's name can rescue it.
