Mahabharata, Anushasana ParvaWhere Lakshmi Lives: Her Words to Rukmini
From the Mahabharata, Anushasana Parva. Once, in Krishna's presence, Queen Rukmini saw Lakshmi and asked her, 'Mother, with whom do you stay, and whom do you leave?'
Lakshmi answered, 'I dwell steadily with those who speak the truth, who are firm in their duty, who do not forget a kindness, who have mastered their senses, who are free from anger, who work hard and who honour their elders.'
'I leave the lazy, the ungrateful, the harsh of speech, the deceitful and those who have strayed from their path. However great their wealth, once I have gone it does not stay.'
Just as Avvaiyar says, Lakshmi's home is not wealth but an honest heart.
