From the Valmiki Ramayana (Yuddha Kanda)Vibhishana's Counsel
From the Valmiki Ramayana. After Hanuman had set Lanka ablaze and gone, Ravana summoned his council. Many ministers told him what he wanted to hear: "O king, what are these men and monkeys to us? We ourselves will destroy them." The hall filled with the bold talk of those who had no real courage.
Then Ravana's brother Vibhishana rose and said humbly, "Brother, it was not righteous to carry off another man's wife. Send Sita back to Rama, or Lanka will be destroyed. I say this only for your good." Ravana flew into a rage. "You who praise my enemy are no brother of mine, but an enemy who looks like kin," he sneered.
Vibhishana grieved. He understood that to go on bowing before a king who would not bow to dharma would make him a partner in that wrong. With four trusted ministers he crossed the sea and sought refuge with Rama. The vanaras were suspicious, but Rama said, "Whoever comes to me seeking refuge I will protect, even if he were Ravana himself," and accepted him. After the war, Vibhishana became king of Lanka.
To bow before a king who bows to nothing is a sorrow; to bow to dharma is true humility.
