From the Mahabharata (Udyoga Parva)The Fall of Nahusha
From the Mahabharata. When Indra went into hiding over the sin of slaying Vritra, the gods and sages placed King Nahusha, famed for his righteousness, on Indra's throne. Once he had the position, his heart changed. Sunk in pleasure, he demanded Indra's wife Shachi as well. On the advice of the gods' preceptor, Shachi said, 'Come to me in a palanquin carried by sages, and I will accept you.' In his pride Nahusha made the sages bear his palanquin. Impatient to go faster, he kicked the sage Agastya and cried, 'Sarpa, sarpa!' ('Move, move!'). Agastya cursed him: 'Fall to earth as a serpent.' At once Nahusha lost his throne and fell as a great python, and Indra regained his place.
