Explanation

What a person desires sets the direction of their life. Those who love fame do good and reach heaven easily; those who love kindness find giving easy; those who love responsibility find sharing easy. On the other side, battle comes easily to the quarrelsome, betrayal of secrets to the gossip, disease to the glutton, and disgrace to the lustful. The paradox that joy comes easily to one who accepts hardship holds a deep truth.

From the Mahabharata (Mahaprasthanika Parva)

Yudhishthira and the Dog

From the Mahabharata. Having renounced the kingdom, the Pandavas and Draupadi set out on their last journey toward the Himalaya. A dog followed them all the way. One by one Draupadi, Sahadeva, Nakula, Arjuna and Bhima fell on the road. Only Yudhishthira and the dog reached the summit. Indra came in his chariot and said, 'Ascend to heaven in your body.' Yudhishthira said, 'This dog that came with me must come too.' 'There is no place in heaven for dogs; leave it,' said Indra. Yudhishthira stood firm: 'To abandon one who has sought my shelter and is devoted to me is a great sin. For that I would give up heaven itself.' Then the dog took its true form as Dharma, and praised his son's righteousness. Yudhishthira ascended to heaven.

To reflect on

All his life Yudhishthira loved dharma and kindness, so at the final test the right choice came easily to him. For lovers of kindness, giving is easy. What I practise loving today is what will come easily to me tomorrow.
