Meaning

If you wish in your hearts never to go to someone, plead your poverty and stand there humiliated, then come to the feet of Tripura! She keeps her devotees from ever going to the base ones, who learned everything except the daily practice of long penance.

Explanation

As in verse 38, Bhattar here calls out to everyone: 'Come and join!' This time he makes a practical promise: if you come to the Mother, you will never have to go to anyone in poverty and be humiliated.

'Those who learned not to learn' is a sharp phrase: people whose only learning is to avoid learning anything good. To hold out one's hand to them is the deepest humiliation. The Mother's grace protects one's self-respect too.

Bhagavata Purana, Book 10

Sudama and the Handful of Flattened Rice

From the Bhagavata Purana. Sudama (Kuchela) was Krishna's childhood friend, and very poor. When his children were starving, at his wife's urging he decided to go to Dwaraka to see Krishna. Having nothing to give, he tied a handful of flattened rice in a torn cloth and took it with him.

Krishna ran to embrace him, seated him on his throne and washed his feet. Sudama said not a word about his poverty and asked for nothing. Krishna himself took the rice and ate it with love.

Sudama returned home empty-handed. But where his hut had stood, there was a palace. Without pleading poverty and without humiliation, he received everything through love alone. Bhattar says the same is true for those who come to the Mother's feet.
