Meaning

She is the creeper whom no one equals in beauty; her lotus feet have turned red from the touch of the rare Vedas; she is the tender, dark Shyamala, a young branch, wearing on her crown the infant crescent of the cool, great moon. While she is here, O heart that stands grieving in loss, do not lament. What lack can you have?

Explanation

The previous verse ended 'great beauty'; this begins 'in beauty'. The first three lines describe the Mother's beauty; in the last line Bhattar suddenly turns to speak to his own heart.

'O heart that stands grieving in loss' is a touching phrase. He comforts a heart wilting over something it has lost: 'When such a Mother is with you, why do you grieve?' The feet that turned red from the worship of the Vedas themselves are our refuge too. That is the hope.

Devi Bhagavata Purana, Book 3

Rama Worships the Goddess in His Grief

From the Devi Bhagavata Purana. After Ravana carried Sita away, Rama and Lakshmana stayed at Kishkindha. All through the rainy season Rama wilted in the grief of separation. 'How can we cross the ocean? How can we defeat Ravana?' his heart asked in turmoil.

Then the sage Narada came. 'Rama, do not grieve. Keep the Navaratri vow in the month of Ashvina and worship the Supreme Mother. By her grace you will win,' he said. Rama kept the nine-day vow and worshipped the Mother as prescribed. On the eighth night the Mother appeared on her lion and gave him a boon: 'Rama, you will defeat Ravana and win back Sita.'

To Rama, standing wilted in great loss, the Mother's grace brought comfort and victory. This is the same trust with which Bhattar tells his heart, 'O heart that stands grieving in loss, do not lament. What lack can you have?'
