Explanation

The previous verse ended 'your skill' (viraginaiye); this begins 'fragrant' (viravum). Those who strew flowers at the Mother's feet night and day, he says, will gain all of Indra's riches.

Indra's five emblems are named: his throne, Airavata, the heavenly Ganga, the thunderbolt and the kalpaka grove. But this verse should be read alongside the truth that the Mother's real devotee does not value even these. The true wealth is the Mother's feet.

Mahabharata, Anushasana Parva (the story of Upamanyu)

Upamanyu Refuses Indra on Airavata

From the Mahabharata. Upamanyu, a boy born in a poor sage's family, once cried for milk. There was none in the house, so his mother stirred rice flour into water for him. 'My son, everything comes by the grace of Shiva; pray to him,' she said. The boy went to the Himalaya and did fierce penance.

To test him, Shiva came in the form of Indra, riding the elephant Airavata. 'What do you want? I will give you Indra's very throne,' he said. Upamanyu firmly refused: 'I want nothing that anyone but Shiva gives.' Delighted by his resolve, Shiva appeared in his true form with Uma, gave him an ocean of milk and blessed him with grace that would never fade.

Even when Airavata and Indra's throne stood before his eyes, Upamanyu wanted only the Lord's feet, and then the Lord came with the Goddess. Indra's riches come of themselves to the Mother's devotees, but what they long for is greater still.

To reflect on

Today, offer a few flowers or one small act to God, expecting nothing in return.
