Explanation

Because every line ends with 'mayile', the verse sounds like one long call to the peacock. Each line names one of its powers. When the peacock dances, the worlds and the seas tremble. The anklets, bells and silambu on its feet ring out like war drums.

The fourth line is the key: 'so that the body of quarrelling Sooran is crushed to ash'. In the Kanda Puranam, Soorapadman fought Murugan and at the end stood as a great mango tree. When Murugan's vel split the tree, one half became a peacock and the other a rooster. So the peacock Murugan rides was once Sooran himself. His pride destroyed, he became the Lord's mount.

The lines that follow place ghosts, demons, brahma-rakshasas, wild beasts and serpents under the peacock's feet. The meaning is simple faith: nothing fearful can stand before Murugan's peacock. The seventh line turns that power towards the devotee: the same peacock shows itself to those who fall at its feet, and protects them.

Kanda Puranam (Kachiyappa Sivacharya), the slaying of Soorapadman

How Sooran Became the Peacock

From the Kanda Puranam. The asura Soorapadman performed fierce penance and won great boons from Shiva. Strong with those boons, he imprisoned the gods and tormented the three worlds. To end the suffering of the gods, Murugan was born from the fire of Shiva's third eye.

Murugan marched with a great army to Sooran's city, Veeramahendrapuram. The war went on for many days. Sooran's brothers and sons fell one by one. At last Sooran used his magic to stand in the middle of the ocean as a gigantic mango tree. Its branches hid the sky and its roots reached the underworld.

Murugan hurled his vel, and it split the mango tree in two. In that moment Sooran saw the Lord's true form, and his pride left him. One half of the split tree became a beautiful peacock and the other half a rooster. Murugan, the ocean of mercy, took the peacock as his mount and the rooster as the emblem on his banner. Such was his grace that he kept even his enemy close to him.

To reflect on

Murugan made his enemy into his own mount. Which fault in yourself could you turn to good use instead of only fighting it?
