Explanation

In the first two lines the root delusion of human life is packed into three words: 'pathi', my town, my home; 'kel', my kin; and 'agam', I. To take this circle of 'I' and 'mine' as the final truth is 'bhramam', delusion. To destroy it, Murugan spoke the true reality, 'meypporul', to the poet.

The last two lines show two faces of Murugan side by side. He is Kumara, the tender son of Parvati, daughter of the mountain king, and he is the warrior who destroyed the asuras in battle.

The two belong together. Destroying delusion within and destroying asuras without are two sides of the same act. Tradition reads the asuras as our own inner arrogance, anger and desire. The Lord who teaches the truth and the Lord who wins the war are one and the same, and the teaching is itself a victory.

Kanda Puranam and the Swamimalai tradition

The Son Who Taught His Father the Meaning of Om

From the Kanda Puranam and the tradition of Swamimalai. One day Brahma, the creator, came to Kailasa, and the boy Murugan asked him, 'What is the meaning of Om?' Brahma carried out the work of creation, yet he could not explain the full meaning of the sacred syllable. Murugan put him in prison and took over the work of creation himself.

Lord Shiva came and asked him to release Brahma. 'And do you know the meaning?' Shiva asked. 'I do,' said the son, 'but a teaching must be received in the proper way.' So Shiva sat before him as a disciple, and Murugan whispered the meaning of the Pranava into his ear.

From that day Murugan has been called Swaminatha, the guru of his own father, and the place where this happened is Swamimalai. When the poet in this verse calls Murugan 'the one who spoke the true reality', he is calling upon that same divine guru.
