The Bhartrihari tradition and the Vairagya ShatakamThe Fruit That Came Back to the King
From the tradition of Bhartrihari. A Brahmin gave King Bhartrihari of Ujjain a rare fruit that granted long life. The king gave it to Queen Pingala, whom he loved more than his own life. The queen secretly gave it to a man she loved. He gave it to a woman he loved. And she, thinking it fit only for a king, brought it back to King Bhartrihari himself.
When the king traced the path the fruit had taken, he was stunned. 'The one I think of thinks of another, and he thinks of yet another,' he said, and in that moment he saw the endless swing of worldly desire. He gave up his throne and became a renunciate. His verses on detachment, the Vairagya Shatakam, are still treasured.
It is the story of a man who woke up when he saw himself swinging in the net of desire, the very state from which Arunagirinathar begs to be freed in this verse.
