Meaning

O nectar that never runs dry! O King with the sharp vel! O treasury of wisdom! Can it even be told? The Supreme swallowed me, who had become an 'I', and stood there alone as itself.

Explanation

In verse 2 the poet spoke of 'the bliss of losing myself'. Here he tells how it happened: 'yaanaagiya ennai vizhungi', it swallowed me, who had become 'I'. He was not lost; he was swallowed, as the ocean swallows a river.

The phrase 'yaan aagiya', 'who had become I', is subtle. I am not by nature an 'I'; I had become one. The ego is not a permanent fact but a habit, something taken on. When that was swallowed, what remained was 'verum thaan', the Supreme standing alone as itself, with no second thing beside it.

The opening names prepare for this. Murugan is 'aanaa amudhu', nectar that never runs out: however much is drunk, it does not diminish. He is the King with the vel and the treasury of wisdom. Yet in the middle of the verse comes the question, 'navilath thagumo?', can it even be told? The poet keeps confessing that words fail, and the confession is the most honest description he can give.

Chandogya Upanishad, chapter 6

The Salt in the Water

From the Chandogya Upanishad. Shvetaketu came home after twelve years of studying the Vedas, proud of all he had learned. His father, the sage Uddalaka, handed him a lump of salt. 'Put this in a bowl of water,' he said, 'and bring it to me in the morning.'

In the morning he said, 'Bring me the salt.' Shvetaketu looked, but the salt could not be seen. 'Taste the water from the top.' 'It is salty.' 'From the middle?' 'Salty.' 'From the bottom?' 'Salty.' Then his father said: 'The salt has dissolved, and it is everywhere. In the same way, that subtle truth pervades everything. That is the real; that is the Self. That you are, Shvetaketu.'

The separate lump of salt was swallowed by the water, and only salty water remained. Arunagirinathar sings of the same thing: the 'I' that stood apart was swallowed, and only the Supreme was left.

To reflect on

If the sense of 'I' is a habit, can you recall a moment when it loosened its hold?
