Meaning

The child who drank the sacred milk of the golden Mother who gave birth to all the worlds, who lay in the flower-cradle of the Saravana pool, who longed for the breasts of the six Krittika mothers, and who sobbed and cried until the sea, the mountains and Sooran himself wept: this is the one the world calls the Lord of the kurinji hills.

Explanation

Even the crying of the divine baby shakes the world. The sea wept, for later Sooran would stand in the sea as a mango tree; the mountain wept, for Krauncha would be split; Sooran wept, for his end had been born. The verse is tender and grand at once. The same infant whom the Mother and the six Krittikas nursed is hailed, in the oldest Tamil tradition, as the Lord of the hills.

Kanda Puranam and the Karthigai tradition

The Krittika Mothers

From the Kanda Puranam. The six Krittika maidens nursed and raised the six babies who appeared in the Saravana pool. In gratitude they were blessed to shine for ever in the sky as the Krittika star cluster, the Pleiades, and it was promised that those who worship Murugan on the day of that star would be especially blessed. So Murugan is called Karthikeya, and the Karthigai day of every month is sacred to him.
