Meaning

Explanation

This is in the manner of old Tamil kurinji poems, which speak at once of the sweetness of lovers meeting and of its danger. The heroine fears harm will come to the hero; her friend stops him.

Kambar makes one change: the oath. In the old poems one swore by the mountain god. Here the oath is sworn by the Lord of Kurugai. The Alvar's name stands as the highest pledge, a guard over all love.

Kanda Puranam (the marriage of Valli)

Valli in the Millet Field

From the Kanda Puranam. On Vallimalai, Valli grew up as the daughter of Nambirajan, chief of the hunters. When she came of age, she sat on a raised platform in the millet field and guarded it, slinging stones to drive away the parrots and birds.

Lord Murugan, wishing to marry her, came first as a hunter, then as a bangle-seller, then as an old ascetic. When he heard the hunters coming, he turned into a vengai tree and stood still. Again and again he came, through the dangers of the mountain path. At last he had his elder brother Vinayaka come as an elephant. The frightened Valli clutched the old ascetic's hand, and then Murugan showed his true form.

The hunters were angry at first, but when they learned the truth they rejoiced and gave Valli to Murugan in marriage. Love in the hill country, the danger of the mountain path, and the grace of God at the end are all in this story. The kurinji world Kambar paints in this verse is the same one.
