Meaning

It establishes the truth of the Supreme. It cuts off the strong arms of opposing doctrines. It reflects deeply on that truth and teaches it clearly. It rises everywhere and stands open to all. It tests and separates the true from the false. 'Does your Veda do all this?' If asked, I would say: the Tamil words of my Lord do all of this.

Explanation

Kambar lists six things a scripture should do: establish the truth, refute wrong doctrines, reflect, teach, stand open to all, and separate the true from the false. These are the tasks of the works of Vedanta. He says the Thiruvaimozhi does them all.

'Stands open to all' is a telling phrase. Not everyone had the chance to learn the Veda. But the Thiruvaimozhi, coming in Tamil, belongs to all. No one is barred from hearing it, singing it or feeling it.

Life of Ramanuja (guruparampara tradition)

The Eighteen-Day Debate with Yajnamurthi

From Vaishnava tradition. Yajnamurthi, a great scholar who had won debates across the land, came to Srirangam to debate with Ramanuja. The condition: 'If I lose, I become your disciple; if you lose, you will never touch the scriptures again.'

The debate went on for eighteen days. At the end of the seventeenth day Yajnamurthi had the upper hand. That night Ramanuja prayed with a melting heart to Perarulalan, the Lord he worshipped. In a dream the Lord appeared and said, 'Do not worry. Argue in the way of Alavandar.'

The next morning Ramanuja came to the assembly with a calm and radiant face. Seeing him, Yajnamurthi knew he had already lost, and fell at his feet. Ramanuja lovingly took him as a disciple and named him Arulala Perumal Emperumanar. The aim of winning a debate is not to defeat the opponent but to bring him too to the truth. That is the victory Kambar means when he says it 'cuts off the arm of other doctrines'.

To reflect on

Why is bringing the other person to the truth a greater victory than winning the argument?
