Meaning

Do not spread this about; listen, and walk on gently. When the cows of the Veda gave no milk, Maran made them yield, so that they poured out their meaning; he helped without hiding anything. O girl, you who are like his poetry! From now on, on this road with wide fields on either side, let there be no more quarrel.

Explanation

The Veda is a cow, but it does not give milk to everyone. Because of barriers of language, learning and eligibility, many could not receive its meaning. Nammalvar made that cow yield, and gave the Veda's meaning to all in Tamil.

'Helped without hiding' matters. He kept nothing back and held nothing for himself. He gave fully and openly.

Srimad Bhagavatam, Book 4, Chapter 18

Prithu Milks the Earth-Cow

From the Srimad Bhagavatam. Under the cruel king Vena, the Earth grieved and hid within herself the grains and herbs. After Vena, Prithu, a portion of Vishnu, became king. Seeing his people wasting with hunger, he took up his bow and turned towards the Earth.

Frightened, the Earth fled in the form of a cow, and Prithu followed. At last she stopped and said: 'King, the wicked plundered me, so I hid the seeds. Give me a calf and a vessel to milk into, and I will yield again.'

Making Svayambhuva Manu the calf and his own hands the vessel, Prithu milked all the grains from the Earth-cow. Then the sages milked the Veda from her, the gods milked nectar, and each milked what they needed. Prithu levelled the hills and laid out towns and fields, and so the Earth is called Prithvi. As Prithu made the unyielding cow give milk, Kambar says Maran made the unyielding cows of the Veda yield.

To reflect on

Think of someone who took a good thing that was out of others' reach and made it available to all.
