Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam (the marriage of Meenakshi)Meenakshi, the Fish-Eyed Goddess
From the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam. Malayadhvaja, the Pandya king, and Queen Kanchanamalai performed a sacrifice for a child. From the sacrificial fire a girl of three appeared. Because her eyes were long and beautiful like fish, she was named Tadathagai, and Meenakshi, the fish-eyed one.
She grew into a princess of courage and learning and became queen of the Pandya land. She set out with a great army on a conquest of the directions and defeated every kingdom. She conquered even the world of the gods, and at last came to Kailasa.
There, seeing Lord Shiva, the eyes that had conquered the world lowered in shyness. She knew he was her bridegroom. Shiva came to Madurai as Sundareshwara and married her, and tradition says Thirumal himself gave her hand in marriage. Fish-eyes that conquered a whole land: what Kambar says of the Kurugur girl's eyes belongs to this same tradition of the Pandya country.
