Mahabharata, Vana Parva (the Yaksha's questions)The Yaksha's Questions at the Lake
From the Mahabharata. During their forest exile the Pandavas were faint with thirst. Nakula went looking for water and found a lovely lake. A voice said: 'Answer my questions, then drink.' He ignored it, drank, and fell senseless. Sahadeva, Arjuna and Bhima each did the same and fell.
At last Yudhishthira came. Humbly he said, 'Ask.' The Yaksha asked many questions: 'What is dharma? What is wealth? What is pleasure? What is the path?' Yudhishthira answered: 'Reasoning is unsteady, the scriptures are many, and every sage says something different. The truth of dharma is hidden in a cave. The path is the one the great have walked.' 'What is the greatest wonder in the world?' 'That every day beings go to Yama's realm, and yet those who remain think they will live for ever.'
Pleased, the Yaksha revealed himself as Dharma, god of righteousness, and restored all the brothers to life. Truth lies not in the tangle of arguments but in the path the great have shown. That is what Kambar means when he says the Alvar's grace 'removed the deceiving tangles'.
