Explanation

In this couplet Valluvar pictures a seeker who is examining what can truly support a life. Some take wealth as their support, some ritual, some learning. 'Nallaatraal naadi' means examining by an honest way. If one does so, one will find in the end that compassion is the support.

Commentators give different readings of 'pallaatraal therinum'. Some take it as even if one examines many religious paths; others as even if one searches among many kinds of virtue. The thought is the same: whichever road one takes, a way without compassion ends in emptiness. So the verse states a truth that people of every tradition can accept.

The verb 'arulaalka' means to rule over or practise compassion. It tells us that compassion is not a feeling that simply happens to us but a quality grown by practice. The practice is daily and small: standing, in little events, in another's place and seeing from there.

Today we reach for many things in order to succeed and to find peace. In the end, those that stand beside us in our distress are the kindnesses we have done to others. People who realise this go deeper into compassion as they grow older, and find that it is the one companion that does not leave.

A story

Ramanuja at Tirukkoshtiyur

Among the traditional accounts of the Vaishnava preceptors, an incident from the life of Ramanuja is much cherished. Ramanuja went again and again to his teacher, Tirukkoshtiyur Nambi, asking to be taught the mantra that grants liberation. Nambi tested him by making him walk back and forth eighteen times. At last, seeing his resolve, Nambi taught him the mantra on one condition: 'Tell it to no one else. If you do, you will go to hell.'

Having received the mantra, Ramanuja did not go home. He climbed the tower of a nearby temple, and from there, without asking of what caste or condition the people were, he proclaimed the mantra aloud to the crowd gathered in the street. Everyone stood and listened.

The news reached Nambi, who angrily summoned him. 'You have broken my command. Hell is certain for you.' Ramanuja replied humbly, 'Master, all who have heard this mantra will gain liberation. If I alone must go to hell for it, that is my good fortune.'

On hearing these merciful words, Nambi's anger melted. He embraced Ramanuja affectionately and said, 'You are Emperumanar, equal to our Lord.' From that day, tradition says, Ramanuja came to be called Emperumanar.

Ramanuja was a master of the scriptures and had examined countless paths. But what he found in the end as the true support was compassion. In taking on the risk of hell for the good of others, he gives the best example of 'pallaatraal therinum ahdhe thunai'.

Even today he is remembered in many temples as one who opened the way of worship to all. In that single act, wisdom and compassion stand together.
