Explanation

The opening phrase, 'porul neengi pochchaandhaar', is read in two ways by commentators. Parimelazhagar and some others take it to mean people who lost their wealth in a previous birth and suffered, yet forgot the lesson, that is, who have known the pain of poverty and still forget compassion. Others take 'porul' as 'the true substance' or the meaning of dharma, and read it as people who have forgotten the real thing.

Whichever reading is adopted, the essence is the same: one who abandons compassion and does wrong has not learned a lesson. Suffering is a teacher meant to make us pity the suffering of others. If a person who has once experienced poverty and distress still acts without compassion and hurts others, it means he has learned nothing from experience.

The word 'enbar', 'they say', makes this a statement of pity rather than an accusation. Valluvar does not speak harshly of the merciless; he gently points out that they have forgotten something. There is an undertone of hope that when what was forgotten is recalled, the mind may change.

We can apply this to our own life. We see people who rise from poverty and then look down on the poor, or who have passed through trouble and then ignore the troubles of others. The hardship we have crossed is worthwhile only if it turns into compassion that helps someone else. The word 'pochchaandhaar' means those who forgot or were careless. If we keep in mind that earlier poverty and sorrow should soften us, every rise we make becomes a chance to help others.

A story

The Merchant Who Forgot

In a temple town near Madurai lived a young man named Selvan. He lost his father when he was small and his family lived in want. On many a night he slept hungry, and it was the free meals of the temple that kept him alive. He often said that he could never forget the days of the Chithirai festival when he sat at the door of the Meenakshi temple and received a full leaf of food.

Time passed. He worked hard and became a grain merchant, and money piled up. He built a big house and hired servants. But as wealth grew his heart hardened. When hungry people stood at his door he drove them off as 'beggars who won't work'. He cut his servants' pay. In a famine he raised the price of grain and made large profits from the poor.

One summer a great fire broke out and his granary burned to ashes. Creditors came and stood at his door, and within months he was in the street again. He felt once more what hunger is. One day he walked to the temple and stood in the line for free food.

When his turn came, the old woman who was serving recognised him and asked gently, 'Sir, are you not the one who drove us from your street?' His head bowed in shame. She did not scold him. She served food on his leaf and said, 'Eat. Hunger is the same for everyone.'

Those words touched his heart. He wept, remembering his childhood days. Afterwards he worked and opened a small shop again, and this time he never failed to give a handful of grain to everyone who came to the door.

Suffering should be a lesson, and that is the message of 'porul neengi pochchaandhaar'.
