Explanation

Here Valluvar makes a large promise: for the compassionate there is no affliction. As evidence he points to 'valivazhangum mallan maagnaalam', the rich and great earth on which the wind moves. The world itself is the witness.

Taken literally the promise raises a question: do good people not suffer? Commentators reply in various ways. Some read 'allal' here as the distress a compassionate person causes others, that is, he will never cause affliction. Others say that his own sufferings do not appear as suffering, because a mind inclined to help others takes even pain with patience.

We can also see the meaning of the world as witness. The wind lets all creatures live without any distinction; the earth bears everyone. These are forms of nature's mercy. Without them no living creature could survive. This shows that compassion is the basic force on which the world runs. The compassionate live in harmony with nature; they neither create affliction nor are caught in it.

When we care for nature or help others today, a peace is born in the heart. That peace gives strength to meet suffering. The word 'kari', witness, was used for one brought as testimony in a case, so by making the whole world the witness Valluvar shows both his poetic skill and the firmness of his conviction. We may also measure 'no affliction' not by outer events but by the state of a heart that is not shattered by pain.

A story

Prahlada's Compassion

The story of Prahlada is told in the Bhagavata Purana. The asura king Hiranyakashipu regarded himself as God. But his son Prahlada, from childhood, was a devotee of Vishnu. His father tried to correct him and could not; Prahlada kept uttering the name of Narayana.

Hiranyakashipu became furious and resolved to kill him. He had him thrown from a mountain peak, but Prahlada came down gently as though falling on flowers. He sent elephants to trample him; they turned aside without touching him. He set snakes to bite him; they lay quiet around him. He gave him poisoned food, and it became nectar. At last he had a fire lit with Prahlada seated in the lap of his sister Holika, who had a boon of resistance to fire; Holika burned and Prahlada rose unharmed.

Through all these sufferings Prahlada felt no hatred towards his father. At the end of every trial there was a smile on his face. Finally Narasimha burst out of a pillar and destroyed Hiranyakashipu. While even the gods trembled at the terrifying form, Prahlada alone went near the Lord without fear and bowed.

Narasimha, pleased, asked, 'What boon do you want?' Prahlada asked nothing for himself. 'Let the sins of my father be removed; let him reach a high state,' he prayed. His was a heart that showed grace even to the one who tried to kill him.

The elders say that afflictions that kept coming did not reach him because there was no hatred towards anyone in his heart. Prahlada's life is a living witness to 'allal arulaalvaarkku illai'.
