Explanation

The mind is like a horse. If let loose it runs to every place that looks pleasant. It does not look whether there is good or evil there. The verse says that to take hold of its reins and turn it toward the good is wisdom. Wisdom is not only information read in books; it is the power to rule the mind.

'Senra idaththaal selavidaa' means not letting the mind go wherever it has gone. 'Theethorii' is removing evil. 'Nandrinpaal uyppathu' is leading toward good. In these three steps the work of wisdom is shown: checking, removing, leading. The skill to do these in order is wisdom.

The mind is by nature pulled by desires and fears. The senses show attractions, and the mind at once follows them. A wise person pauses that pull for a moment and asks, 'Is this good or evil?' The place of wisdom is that moment's gap. One without that gap is a slave of desire.

The verse can be compared with the question Arjuna asks in the sixth chapter of the Bhagavad Gita. He says the mind is restless, strong and hard to control. Krishna says it can be controlled by practice and non-attachment. Valluvar too sees wisdom as that practice.

In life today phones, advertising and trade show a thousand ways to pull the mind. What to look at and where to spend time must be chosen with wisdom. That choice is the act of wisdom that this verse speaks of.

A story

Arjuna and Urvashi

In the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata, during the Pandavas' forest exile, Arjuna went to Indra's world to obtain divine weapons. There Indra arranged for him to be taught learning, music and dance. Arjuna studied the arts under the gandharva Chitrasena.

One day in Indra's court the beautiful celestial woman Urvashi danced. Indra noticed that Arjuna gazed at her without blinking. He wished to test Arjuna's mind. He sent Chitrasena to ask Urvashi to go to Arjuna.

At midnight, adorned, Urvashi came to Arjuna's dwelling. 'I desire you; I wish to be with you,' she said. Her beauty and fragrance could draw anyone's mind. Other men would not have refused this chance.

Arjuna bowed his head. 'Mother, you were the wife of Pururavas, the ancestor of our line. You are like a mother of our Puru dynasty. I see you as a mother,' he said. Urvashi argued, 'Women of the world of the gods have no such rule.' Arjuna refused firmly: 'To me you stand in the place of mother. I will not break it.'

Angered, Urvashi cursed him: 'You will be without manhood for a year.' Arjuna accepted the curse calmly. When Indra learned of it he praised Arjuna and said, 'This curse will be a boon to you. You can spend it in whichever year you wish.' Later, in the year of hiding, it helped Arjuna live disguised as Brihannala, a teacher of dance in Virata's palace.

Arjuna's wisdom, which did not let the mind go wherever it went but removed evil and sought good, turned in the end into protection what at first seemed a loss. The story teaches that the true fruit of wisdom, though not seen at once, shows with time.
