Explanation

The last verse of the chapter on the Possession of Knowledge sums up its central idea: the wise possess everything; the unwise, whatever else they possess, have nothing. It is a strong statement. Valluvar says that the wise man, even without money, army or rank, possesses everything, and that the unwise, even holding all of these, has nothing.

Why so? The wise man knows the way to obtain all that he needs. Even if he loses, he will regain. The unwise cannot even guard what he holds; he will misuse it and lose it. So ownership is not what is in the hand but the power to use it. That power lies in wisdom.

The phrase 'ennudaiyarenum ilar' is heavily stressed. It comes with the sense that whatever he may own, they are not truly his. His wealth does not belong to him; it rules him. This is a subtle truth of life.

Some commentators say the wise have the power to gain all riches, and that the unwise, even when they get wealth, cannot use it. Others say that the wise may be taken to have everything because they have contentment of mind.

In life today there are those who live without peace though they have wealth, and those who find contentment in a simple life. The difference lies in wisdom. So the chief wealth we should gather in our lives is wisdom.

A story

Arjuna Chooses Krishna

In the Udyoga Parva of the Mahabharata war had become certain. Both sides were seeking allies. Duryodhana and Arjuna both went to Dwaraka to seek Krishna's help. They both reached Krishna's palace on the same day.

Krishna was asleep. Duryodhana went in first and sat on a high seat at the head of Krishna's bed. Arjuna came later and stood humbly with folded hands at Krishna's feet. When Krishna woke he saw Arjuna first, and then Duryodhana.

Each told the purpose of his coming. Krishna said, 'You are both my kin. But I saw Arjuna first, and he is also the younger. So he has the first choice. I have two helps to give. One is my Narayani army of ten crore warriors. The other is myself alone, unarmed, not taking part in the fighting, as an adviser. Which do you want?'

Without a moment's hesitation Arjuna said, 'I want you.' Duryodhana was delighted. 'In ignorance Arjuna chose a single man; I have got a great army,' he thought. Happily he took the army and left.

Krishna said to Arjuna, 'Why did you choose me, unarmed?' Arjuna said, 'It is enough that I have you. Even without an army, your wisdom and guidance will be everything to me.' Krishna agreed to be his charioteer.

In the Kurukshetra war Duryodhana, with his great army, was defeated. Arjuna, who had as ally Krishna, the embodiment of wisdom, won. When he faltered in the midst of the war, the Gita made that wisdom clearer to him.

This incident clearly shows the truth of the verse, 'the wise possess everything, the unwise, whatever they own, have nothing.' Though Duryodhana had a great army, he had no victory.

To reflect on

When you choose what to invest in, do you put more into things you can count, or into wisdom and good counsel?
