Meaning
O Meykanda Deva, who rose at Vennainallur as the sun rises over this wide world! You lifted me, sunk in a misery like a prison, and set me in Your unfailing bliss. Yet my questions do not end. If ignorance, the malam, never leaves the soul, and You awaken the soul by standing mixed with it, then how can Your names fit: the Pure, the Stainless, the Lord of Light, the Free, the Supreme beyond all? If You awaken it standing apart, You are not all-pervading. You dance in eight forms, earth, fire, water, the sacrificer, the wind and the rest; so You must say whether You are apart from us or one with us. If You say, 'We give grace only to the ripe soul', then if ripeness comes by itself, what use are You? If You come as the fruit of ripeness, then ripeness brings You. The three malas are inert and the soul is small; who brings them to ripeness? Whether I remove the malam or it falls away by itself, no Lord is needed. Tell me. (The guru's answer:) You have not understood Appar's saying, 'Who can see unless You show?', nor Sambandar's words spoken before the Pandya king, 'the grace He gives to those who are His own'. Know them.

Explanation
The agavals of Irupa Irupathu are the deep doubts a disciple lays before his guru. Here Arulnandiyar asks how God is related to the malam. The answer of Shaiva Siddhanta is that the Lord always stands in union with the soul (advaita), yet the malam does not touch Him, as water does not wet a lotus leaf. The second sutra of the Sivagnana Bodham says the Lord is with souls 'as one, as other, and together'. Ripeness is not something the soul achieves alone: the Lord's veiling power (tirodhana sakti) feeds karma to the soul and so ripens the malam. From beginning to end, His grace is the cause. 'Who can see, O forehead-eyed Lord, unless You show?' is from Appar's Thevaram. The guru recalls the Thiruppasuram that Thirugnanasambandar sang at Madurai before the Pandya king: 'If one sets out to hear of the grace He gives to His own and of His primal glory, there is no end to it.'
To reflect on
Do we think we rise by our own effort alone? Do we see the Lord's hand in every good opening that came to us?
