Compassion · Arulutaimai

This chapter teaches that a heart full of compassion for every living being is a wealth higher than any material riches. Valluvar assures us that the merciful do not enter a dark world and that fear and suffering do not draw near them.

Introduction

The chapter on compassion opens the Ascetic Virtue section of the Book of Virtue, right after the section on domestic life. In the household we care for family, kin and village, and love is the first virtue there. Arul, the compassion with which Valluvar begins the next section, is the widening of that love. Love goes out to one's own; arul goes out to every creature, the kin and the stranger, the animal and the worm alike. This chapter is therefore the doorway through which a householder passes beyond his own boundary into a larger heart.

The word arul means both the grace of God and the compassion of a human being. That double sense is no accident. In our tradition the Lord is merciful, and one who wishes to reach him must become merciful too. After asking us in the opening chapter to seek the feet of the Supreme, Valluvar shows here that his very nature can be cultivated within ourselves. Compassion is thus not only a feeling but also a discipline.

The ten couplets grow step by step. The first announces the excellence of the wealth of compassion: material riches are found even with base people, but not this. The second says that after examining every path, compassion alone proves a support. The third, fourth and fifth assure the merciful that darkness, dread and suffering will not come near them. Six to eight describe the plight of the merciless: neither this world nor the next is theirs, and they are truly poor. The ninth shows that a hard heart's acts of charity bear no fruit. The tenth offers a fine test: remember how it feels to tremble before one stronger than yourself, and bring that feeling to bear when you stand before someone weaker.

Read together, the verses present compassion not as a soft sentiment alone but as a foundation that bears the weight of life. Valluvar offers it as a comfort rather than a threat: the merciful are not reached by evil deeds. This agrees with our teaching of karma, whose essence is that those who bring no suffering to others will not suffer themselves.

In our own times compassion shows itself in many ways: the care people give in disasters and illness, the tenderness shown to animals and to the environment. In days full of anger and competition, to pause for a moment and feel another creature's pain makes us truly human. This chapter trains that habit.

Chapter story

Valmiki and the Krauncha Bird

In the Bala Kanda of the Ramayana we read of an event in the life of the sage Valmiki. One day Valmiki went with his disciple Bharadvaja to bathe at the river Tamasa. Delighted by the clear water, he noticed a pair of krauncha birds on a branch, inseparable and cooing to each other. The loving sight filled his heart.

At that moment an arrow shot by a hunter struck the male bird. It fell, writhing, and died. The female circled in the sky, crying for her lost mate, and her cry pierced the sage's heart. Compassion, which makes another's suffering one's own, rose in him. He turned to the hunter and spoke words to the effect: 'Nishada, you will not enjoy lasting repute, for you have killed one of a pair of birds united in love.'

Valmiki marvelled that words born of anger had fallen into a measured rhythm. 'Born of sorrow, shoka, it has become shloka,' he told his disciple. Later Brahma appeared and told him to compose the story of Rama in that very metre. So was born the Ramayana, the first great poem.

What is worth noting is that the epic begins in pity for a living creature. A tradition says that before this Valmiki had been a hunter named Ratnakara who was changed by the sage Narada's counsel; some regard this as a later development in the tradition. In any case, the text itself says that a heart moved by the grief of a bird became the doorway to a poem.

This shows the power of compassion. The heart that trembled for a bird was the heart that later sang Rama's righteous tale. Without compassion there is no poetry, and without compassion there is no dharma.

In our own lives there come moments when a small creature's suffering softens the heart. If we do not push such a moment aside but turn it into action, it becomes the first step of our uplift. The Ramayana begins, in the text itself, with Valmiki asking Narada who in the world is truly full of wisdom, dharma and valour, and Narada briefly tells him the story of Rama. That tale was deep in the sage's mind on the very day he went to the Tamasa, so we may understand that a sage already filled with the gracious image of Rama could not bear the sight of a bird in pain. Bharadvaja noticed the change in his teacher's face; seeing him repeat the words again and again, the disciple memorised them and marvelled at their beauty. Back at the hermitage Valmiki could not forget the cry of the bird, and that tenderness opened the way for Brahma's visit and for the epic. Compassion runs through the whole Ramayana: Rama accepting Vibhishana who sought refuge, performing the last rites of Jatayu himself, and receiving Shabari's tasted fruits with love are different faces of arul. The reason Rama is praised as an ocean of compassion lies in the pity of that first moment from which the epic was born.
