Explanation

Commentators explain this couplet in two ways. Some take it that the fort in its design has devices and obstacles that make the enemy fall and perish at the front line. They also explain 'vinaimukaththu veereydhi' as the excellence of the many man-made devices set within the fort.

Others take it that the fort should excel in the actions of its guards, and that it is by their skill that the enemy falls at the front. In both explanations the idea is that the fort's structure and its men together have the power to bring the enemy down.

'Munaimukam' is the front line of battle. It is excellent for the enemy to fall there, since their entry into the fort is prevented. This also implies a preemptive obstacle. A good fort weakens the enemy before he comes near.

This couplet also stands as a conclusion to the earlier couplets on the fort and leads into the final lesson of the tenth. It teaches that a fort is not a static object but a structure in action. So the best reading joins both explanations: a fort in which structure and action combine. However fine a fort's devices, they are no use without the skill of the men who work them. Likewise however skilful the fighters, a weak structure reduces their power. Only when the two join does it become an 'excellent fort'.

A story

Abhimanyu and the Chakravyuha

The Drona Parva of the Mahabharata tells of the thirteenth day of the Kurukshetra war. Dronacharya formed the battle array called the Chakravyuha. It was a spiral, circular formation, hard to enter and hard to leave. It was like a moving fort.

The Mahabharata says only Arjuna and Krishna knew how to break that array. That day Arjuna had been drawn away into battle elsewhere. His son Abhimanyu had learned in his mother's womb the way to enter the array, but not how to come out.

Yudhishthira asked Abhimanyu to enter and open a way. Warriors like Bhima assured him they would follow. Abhimanyu broke in and felled countless warriors. But Jayadratha held back those who followed.

Alone inside, Abhimanyu was surrounded and attacked by many warriors including Drona, Karna and Kripa. Although he fought alone, he finally fell, the Mahabharata says.

In this story the Chakravyuha works as a fort, in which warriors fall at the front itself. Valluvar's phrase 'at the front the enemies fall' comes to mind. Drona built it, and its strength lay in the skill and unity of those who held it. Although Abhimanyu's valour seemed to shatter it, without support he could not win. It shows that not only the structure of a fort but the co-operation of the people who operate it is important. Abhimanyu's sacrifice is still honoured today.
