Meaning
Praise to you who bring the three worlds into being! You transform them, wipe them away, make them grow and protect them! As taste is mingled in fruit and movement in the wind, you are mingled in everything. You shine as the whole world, praise to you! Mother, praise! Nectar, praise!
You are the newness in what is new and the age in what is old, the life in life and the life even in death. You are the truth in what we call 'that which is'. Within me you are the thing called 'I', and you are the undying flame that swells that 'I' and turns it into the Self. You are an ocean of medicine that cures the disease of worry, the great sun that destroys the darkness of sickness. You are the gem shining at the centre of the crown of wisdom worn by true yogis who live without 'I' and 'mine'. Mother who stands as action, as zeal, as mind, as knowledge - praise to you every day!
I asked for joy: give it, praise to you! I do not want sorrow: wipe it away, praise to you! I asked for nectar: grant it, praise to you! Shakti, praise! Mother, praise! Liberation, praise! Silence, praise! I do not want death: turn it away, praise to you!

Explanation
This is a 'potri' hymn of praise in agaval metre. Behind it stands the tradition of Manikkavasagar's Potri Thiruvagaval, but here the one praised is Shakti, the Mother.
The opening names her five acts: creating, transforming, dissolving, nourishing and protecting. The simile of taste in fruit and movement in wind is simple and deep. Taste cannot be separated from fruit, and Shakti cannot be separated from the world.
'You swell that I and turn it into the Self' is the essence of Vedanta. Bharathiyar does not ask for the ego to be crushed; he asks for it to be enlarged until it becomes the Supreme. The last line, 'I do not want death', sounds his lifelong search for deathlessness.
To reflect on
What is the difference between destroying the 'I' and enlarging it until it becomes the Self?
