Meaning

Kill my infatuation, or else stop my breath. Strike down my body, or else destroy the [wrong] thinking in it. Establish me in yoga, or else tear my flesh apart. You who, being one, make everything in this world!

Remove my bondage, or else take away the burden of my life. Make my mind clear, or else make this a dead body. Am I to go on thinking this chaff is grain? You who stand within every thing and move it!

Will my heart not grow cool? Will the flaw of false ego not leave me? Will my deceit not melt? Mother! Will tears of devotion not flow? In the flood of your compassion, will this dog's petty cravings not cease? You who cannot be put into words, you who pervade all!

Explanation

This is a fierce prayer. Every line takes the form 'do this, or else destroy me'. There is no middle way: better that breath should stop than to live in delusion.

'Am I to go on thinking this chaff is grain?' is its centre. Worldly pleasures are empty husks, and delusion is mistaking them for grain. He asks to be freed from that mistake.

In the third part the tone softens. 'Will my heart not grow cool?' 'Will tears of devotion not flow?' Anger turns into longing. Calling himself 'this dog' is the humility of devotees like Manikkavasagar. In Shaiva Siddhanta, anava, the ego, is the first impurity that binds the soul; its ending is liberation.

To reflect on

Is there some chaff in your life that you have been treating as grain?
