Explanation

This verse raises the question whether the strong need a fortress, and answers that they do. 'Muran serndha moymbinavar' are those who have the strength to contend with enemies. 'Moymbu' is the power of the shoulders, valour. For even such persons, says Valluvar, joining a stronghold gives many benefits. While strength is on one side, a safe position multiplies it manifold.

The fortress, 'aran', stands for fort, wall, moat, mountain and forest. A strong warrior needs protection when he sleeps at night, when he rests wounded, and when he is gathering his army. At such times the fortress saves his life. Even after going out and winning a battle, he needs a place to return to and stay.

The fortress does not stand in place of strength; it exists to increase strength. If strength alone were present, the enemy could easily crush it in a moment of fatigue. If a fortress is there, even when strength tires, it can be gathered again. That is why it gives 'palavum', many gains, against the enemy's numbers, loss of food and change of season.

In life today the meaning is clear. Even the talented need a safe work setting, a trusting family and savings as their fortress. An entrepreneur keeps the savings he needs alongside his plans. Strength alone is not enough; it needs a structure that protects it, and a wise person builds that structure before the storm, not after.

A story

Dwaraka Raised in the Sea

From the Bhagavata Purana, Vishnu Purana and Harivamsa: After Krishna slew Kamsa, king of Mathura, Kamsa's father-in-law Jarasandha, king of Magadha, burned with rage. He attacked Mathura with huge armies seventeen times. Each time Krishna and Balarama defeated him, but Jarasandha returned again and again with fresh forces.

Krishna understood something. He and Balarama had unmatched strength. But Mathura lay on an open plain, easy to attack from every side. Their strength could win each battle, yet the townsfolk suffered in every war. Strength alone was not enough; a stronghold was needed too.

So he led the Yadavas to the western coast. In the sea, at a place surrounded by water on three sides, he wished to found a new city. Vishwakarma, the divine architect, built the beautiful city of Dwaraka there, with lofty walls, broad gates, gardens and mansions. The sea around it stood as a barrier against enemies.

All the Yadavas settled in that fortified city. After that, Jarasandha's armies could not easily approach. The people lived without fear and trade flourished. Because Krishna's power was joined to a stronghold, the Yadava clan grew in peace for many years.

Even for one as mighty as Krishna, the fortress brought great benefit. Dwaraka shows the world the truth of the verse: even the powerful gain many advantages by being based in a fortified place.
