Meaning
You said the qualities of the anava malam are eight: wavering thought, arrogance, anger, infatuation, killing, sorrow, pride and mockery. The qualities of maya are seven: ignorance, falsehood, weariness, delusion, slander, envy and fear. The qualities of karma are six: sitting, lying down, doing the two kinds of deeds, letting go, reviling others, and clinging. These never leave me; they drive me their own way and stand as if they were me, so that nothing is left that I can call my own way. O Crest-jewel of the Shaivas in Vennai encircled by the Pennai river, who came with a town, a name and a form and destroyed my town, my name and my form! You said the three malas are inert. That seems a contradiction: how can what is inert act? The malam cannot come to me by itself; I did not take it on; and You, the Pure One, would not do it. If it is my nature, it will never go. O You without beginning or end, tell me how this bondage came, so that my confusion may end.

Explanation
This is the oldest question about bondage. Shaiva Siddhanta answers that the anava malam is 'anadi', without beginning. It is with the soul by nature (sahaja), as verdigris is in copper. It did not arrive one day, so the question 'when did it come?' does not arise. Yet just as natural verdigris is removed by alchemy, the malam is removed by the Lord's grace. The malam is indeed inert; it does not act on its own, and bears fruit only when set in motion by the Lord's power. The line about 'a town, a name and a form' is beautiful: the Lord, who has no town, name or form, took a town, a name and a form as Meykandar and destroyed the soul's false identities. It recalls Manikkavasagar's line in the Thiruvasagam: 'Let us sing a thousand holy names to Him who has not one name, not one form.'
To reflect on
Can we see that the anger, envy and fear that bind us are not who we are? Which quality pulled me its own way today?
