Meaning

If you will take me, call me among your loving devotees and set me to serve. O you who wear konrai flowers, never empty of honey and of bees! O my father, you stand in the middle, below, above and in all things, as oil stands in sesame.

Explanation

'Like oil in sesame' is a famous Saiva Siddhanta image. Every seed holds oil, though no eye can see it, and it comes out only when pressed. The Lord too is in all things, yet grace and practice are needed to find him. The Svetasvatara Upanishad (1.15) uses the very same image.

The poet's request is simple: call me among your devotees and give me work. Not alone, but as one among the company of devotees. This is the only return he can make.

Thiruvathavurar Puranam of Kadavul Mamunivar; Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam of Paranjothi Munivar

Left Alone Beneath the Kurundha Tree

Vathavurar, chief minister of the Pandya king, set out with royal gold to buy horses. At Perunthurai he saw a guru seated beneath a kurundha tree, surrounded by devotees. The moment the guru placed his foot on Vathavurar's head in initiation, the minister forgot himself. His post, the king's errand and the gold in his care no longer mattered. Songs poured from his lips like gems, and the guru named him Manikkavasagar, 'he whose words are rubies'.

For a time he lived with the guru and his devotees. Then one day the guru called the devotees and said, 'A fire will rise in that pond. Plunge into it and come to me.' Turning to Manikkavasagar, he said, 'You stay here and raise this temple; afterwards come to Thillai.' And he vanished. The devotees all entered that light and merged with the Lord. Manikkavasagar alone was left standing on the bank.

With his guru and companions gone, he fell senseless, rolled on the ground and wept: 'Why did you leave me behind?' Thiruchathagam was born from the pain of that parting. Lines such as 'were there no other devotees?', 'falsehood and I were left outside' and 'you and your devotees went there and set me here' are memories of that day. Later the king imprisoned him, and the Lord rescued him by turning jackals into horses, flooding the Vaigai and taking a blow of the cane while carrying earth for its banks. At last Manikkavasagar merged with the Lord at Thillai. Thiruchathagam is the first cry of that long journey.

To reflect on

What could you do to bring out the good hidden in everything, like oil from sesame?
