Explanation

Those who took a share at Daksha's sacrifice were punished, and Vishnu had joined it too. Yet he escaped with his life, and the girls marvel at it. In the Puranas, Vishnu fought Virabhadra, was defeated and later bowed to Siva.

'Father of Brahma' is Vishnu, from whose navel Brahma was born. Even one so great cannot escape if he stands in the wrong place. Where we choose to stand matters.

The Three Cities Burned by a Smile

Tarakaksha, Kamalaksha and Vidyunmali, the three sons of the demon Taraka, won a boon from Brahma through fierce penance. The demon architect Maya built them three flying cities, of gold, silver and iron. By the boon, the cities could be destroyed only when all three came into a single line, once in a thousand years, and only by a single arrow. From those cities the demons tormented all three worlds.

The gods appealed to Siva, and a mighty chariot was built for him: the earth was its body, the sun and moon its wheels, the four Vedas its horses, Brahma its driver, Mount Meru the bow, the serpent Vasuki the string and Vishnu the arrow. The gods thought, 'He will win only because of our help.' The moment the Lord set foot on the chariot, its axle snapped, and Vishnu became a bull to bear him up.

The three cities came into line. The Lord drew the bow, but he never loosed the arrow. He smiled once, and from that smile rose a fire that burned the three cities to ash. Only three demons in those cities who had worshipped Siva were spared, and they became the guardians of his gates and his drummer. Temple tradition places this at Thiruvathigai. Saiva Siddhanta reads the story inwardly: the three cities are the three malas, anava, karma and maya, and in the moment they line up, a single smile of grace is enough to burn them. Thiruvunthiyar opens with exactly this: 'the three cities were shaken, and how they all burned together.'
