Meaning

You saved me from being like the fool who takes a mirage for a pond full of flowers and runs to scoop up its water. O Dancer, who performs the holy dance in the Hall of shining Thillai! So that we may reach your red feet, let us play the tholnokkam!

Explanation

Thiruthol Nokkam was sung at Thillai. Commentators say tholnokkam was a game in which girls held one another by the shoulder and danced in a ring. All fourteen verses end with 'tholnokkam'.

Peyther is the mirage that looks like water in the desert. Worldly pleasures are like that: water from far off, only sand up close. Adi Sankara too compares the world to the mirage a thirsty deer chases. The Lord cured that illusion.

Periya Puranam (Sekkizhar), the life of Chandesvara Nayanar; temple tradition of Thiruseignalur

Chandesvara, the Boy Who Bathed the Lord in Milk

At Thiruseignalur on the banks of the Manni river in the Chola land, a Brahmin named Echadattan had a son, Vicharasarman. While still a boy he mastered the Vedas and understood that their meaning is Siva. One day he saw the village cowherd beating a cow, and in distress he said, 'From now on I will tend them myself.'

Under his loving care the cows thrived, and at the sight of him they let down their milk of their own accord. Not wanting it to go to waste, he made a linga of river sand, decked it with flowers, milked the cows into pots, and bathed the linga with the milk in worship. He did this every day, and the village never lacked milk. Still, someone complained to Echadattan that his son was pouring the cows' milk out on the sand.

The next day the father hid behind a tree and watched. Seeing his son absorbed in worship, he flew into a rage, ran up and beat him, and kicked over the pots of milk. Lost in worship, the boy did not feel the blows; but when the milk was spilled he knew an offence had been done against Siva. He picked up a stick lying nearby and flung it. It became an axe and cut his father's legs, and the boy returned to his worship.

Then the Lord appeared with Uma on the bull, embraced the boy and said, 'For my sake you struck down the father who begot you. From now on I am your father.' He placed the konrai garland from his own hair on the boy, made him Chandesvara, guardian of the Lord's possessions, and granted him a share of the food, cloth and garlands offered to the Lord. The father too was restored and given release. To this day, at the end of worship in a Siva temple, devotees bow at Chandesvara's shrine and show that they carry away nothing that belongs to the temple. When Thiruthol Nokkam sings that 'the crime became his food', this is the story.

To reflect on

Which pleasure you are chasing might be a mirage?
