The Adhyatma Ramayana, Ayodhya Kanda

Who Will Share the Sin?

From the Adhyatma Ramayana, where Valmiki tells his own story to Rama. Before he became a sage, he lived as a highway robber who stripped travellers to feed his family. One day he stopped the seven great rishis on the road.

They asked him calmly: "You do this for your family. Go and ask them whether they will share the sin as well as the spoils." He tied the sages to a tree and went home. His wife and children each said the same thing: "It is your duty to provide for us. The sin is yours alone." He came back shaken, fell at the sages' feet, and began the long penance that made him Valmiki. Others share the fruit of evil; the doer bears it alone.
